The terror that flaps in the night.

Posted in Blog, Ulduar on Apr 23, 2009

Recently, I was asked what I thought about Feral DPS in Ulduar. This pretty much sums it up:

For reference purposes, this is just a Recount screenshot from an old XT-002 attempt. These numbers are on the high end but are typical for that encounter. This is partially because you do double-damage during the “heart” phase, and also because XT-002 functions as the new melee Patchwerk. You can assume normal 25-man raid buffs (flasks, food, Kings, your mom), Hysteria, and Speed Pots. Additionally, I’d just like to note that the comingling of Naxxramas and Ulduar gear is a little terrifying. Look forward to my latest and greatest updated DPS gear lists coming tomorrow!

Posting a recount screenshot is not really a valid way to justify feral DPS.

    1) Specific boss not mentioned (dps varies dependent on boss mobility)
    2) Duration of fight not mentioned (1 berserk? 2 berserk? 30s? etc)
    3) Post a WWS, it’s a lot more informative.

It’s only a snapshot of a single encounter, and not meant to be representative of every single fight ever, especially if you consider fights like Kologarn where you can’t ever get behind the boss/arm. It’s also only really possible in a 25 man when I’m getting Hysteria and Abominable Might.

If I really wanted to say HEY DPS LOLOL I’d just post an SS of a pull where I’m doing 18K DPS with Swipe. I would think that’s fairly self-explanatory. More details about the rotation I’m using and what buffs I’m getting will be included on my next DPS write up.

I am occasionally guilty of filler posts, especially during work hours.

Also I take back everything I said yesterday about “aww, it can’t look THAT ridiculous.” You have proven me wrong; I am humbled. /grovel

I wish I could pretend to look sinister, but it just doesn’t happen. Can I send you my “sekret projekt” to take a look at? I tried using it last night and the world exploded.

If you know what I mean.

Sure, fire it to me in an email and I’ll take a look at it tonight or tomorrow.

        Wow…that’s a ton of damage.

I’ve always offspec’d my resto druid as boomkin but I’ve gotten an itch to try out tanking again( used to be our paladin MT ). How much variation is there between a full on dps spec for kitty and a tanking talent spec?

To be perfectly honest, I haven’t tried seriously DPSing with my tanking build (but I imagine it isn’t pretty). If you’re going for a full on tank spec, you’re (potentially) skipping some pretty essential DPS talents like Master Shapeshifter, Shredding Attacks, iMangle, Predatory Instincts, and/or King of the Jungle.

Damn. The best I’ve gotten so far is 6k on XT, but that was before I figured out how to actually shred his heart. Nice.

It’s definitely the more fun of the two things, that’s for sure. They did a really, really good job on making feral dps competitive and enjoyable.

It’s not entirely typical damage, but I do usually see 5-6k on any given (aka melee oriented) fight. I guess what I really enjoy about Feral DPS right now is that I feel like the effort I put into maintaining my rotation is now a direct reflection of the damage I do. It’s pretty nice.

I also got that helm last night along with the cool animation rogue shoulders and 10T8 shoulders. T8 shoulders and that helm with the long NELF ears sticking out of the back is an odd combo O.o haha.

Yeah, those shoulders are pretty sweet. Grats!

Thanks! And btw, when I was looking over my RSS feeds I misread the title again thinking it said, “The terror that faps in the night.”

Although it can be difficult to compare performance using XT-002 as you have no idea how many bombs each dpser got. Sometimes you get lucky and get to stay in the whole time, and sometimes you get unlucky and get 4+ and spend most of the time trying to avoid aoeing the rest of the melee ;)

Speaking of shredding the heart, can some one tell me which side to stand on (I’ve been mangle spamming it with beserk). I presume it is not tanked, so I’m guessing that its front is toward the front of XT-002?

If your tank had his back to the staircase (meaning that XT was facing said staircase), you shouldn’t even have to move to DPS the heart. Just stay at the back of the XT and Shred to your little heart’s content.

I’ve heard that some people are having issues with Shred on the heart, but supposedly if you move back to max range it eliminates the problem.

I can confirm that this worked great tonight on the heart. I just made sure I didn’t move in any further and I had no probs.

Insane dps on XT, but then again I’ve seen around 7400 on one attempt of that boss. I normally end up with around 6500 dps. How about yourself? =)
